The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
