The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
