They're Repeating to America What They Executed to Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and characteristic moments – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. During the period of multiple weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions of the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing to erect it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of casualties resulting from his reductions to international aid amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study predicted his energy policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of multiple the richest Americans, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.

We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the world' toward 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'

As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who might not perceive it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have observed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness about him since they are non-believers or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of significant worth in the Christian story.

It is unquestionably definitely not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, a baby is born to homeless parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to evade secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his teaching is about love for other people, particularly for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and protecting. Christ's response to aggression is to present the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his crime policy states that when an individual takes your outer garment you should give them your pullover as well.

The apparent and clear reality that Christ in biblical accounts requests a form of profound affection concentrated on the needy is what has always made the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Highest Within Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to observe the persistent defiance against Trump develop in this past year. It has served as significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in numbers during minor elections. We must have to continue it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags throughout each rally and requests to the best parts of American history.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you receive him and welcome him or refuse?

The nation is most protected, to put it differently, by relationship to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is best defended by relationship to elements that cause it to be unique and magnificent, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it imply acting as if the most damaging of both America and Christian faith did not happen; it means both humility and conviction, a combination that committed US believers ought to accept.
